Chapter 71: The Process of Extinguishing Suffering
At one time, the Buddha lived in the Garden of Solitude in the Gion Grove of the Acropolis. One day, the Buddha said to his monks, "Disciples, I will tell you about the process of gathering and appearing suffering; the process of extinguishing and disappearing suffering. You have to listen carefully, you have to think carefully, and now you have to start speaking. ”
The monks replied, "Shizun, we will listen carefully to what you have to say, we will think about it seriously, and I respectfully ask you to speak for us." ”
The Buddha said, "Disciples, how do suffering gather and appear? When the eyes meet things, they produce vision through the transmission of light. Touch occurs when the eyes, things (transmitted by light), and the eyes converge and merge. What is touch? It is the perception of external things. The disciples are in other words: when the eyes meet things, the transmission of light will distinguish the existence and difference of external things, and produce cognition of external things. Seeing is the difference between seeing and touching? Seeing is distinguishing, judging the existence and difference of things. Touch, on the other hand, is the direct determination and recognition of things. That is, the eyes meet things, and through the transmission of light, they will distinguish the different light of various things, and finally determine the recognition of what they see. Taking "touch" as the precondition will produce all kinds of "feelings", and taking "feelings" as the precondition will produce "craving", disciples, this is the process of pain gathering and appearing. This is the method of dependent origin (for the interpretation of the method of dependent origin, see chapters 48 and 49).
When the ear meets the sound, the transmission through various media will produce ear recognition. It is to recognize, distinguish, and judge the sounds made by the outside world. When the ear, sound (transmitted through various media), and ear knowledge converge and merge, touch occurs. What is touch? It is the recognition of external sounds. The disciples are that when the ear meets the sound, the transmission through various media will distinguish the existence and difference of the external sound, and produce the cognition of the external sound. Hearing is the difference between hearing and touch? Hearing is to distinguish and judge the presence or absence of sound. Touch, on the other hand, is the direct determination and recognition of sound. That is, the ear meets the sound, transmits through various media, will distinguish a variety of different sounds, and finally determine the recognition of the sound they hear.
When the nose meets the smell, the transmission through various media will produce nasal recognition. What is nasal awareness? It is to recognize, distinguish, and judge the smell emitted by the outside world. When the nose, smell (transmitted through various media), and nose converge and merge, touch will occur. What is touch? It is the perception of the smell of the outside world. The disciples say: when the nose meets the smell, the transmission through various media will distinguish the existence and difference of the external odor, and produce the cognition of the external odor. Nasal recognition is the difference between nasal awareness and touch? Nasal recognition is to distinguish and judge the presence or absence of smells, and differences. Touch, on the other hand, is the direct determination and cognition of odors. That is, the nose and the smell meet, and through various media, they will distinguish a variety of different smells, and finally determine the smell they smell.
When the tongue meets the taste, tongue knowledge will be produced, what is tongue knowledge? It is to recognize, distinguish, and judge the taste of external things. When the tongue, taste, and tongue knowledge converge and merge, touch will occur, what is touch? The disciples say: when the tongue meets the taste, they will distinguish the existence and difference of the external taste, and produce a perception of the external taste. What is the difference between tongue knowledge and touch? Tongue knowledge is to distinguish and judge the presence and absence of taste, and difference. Touch, on the other hand, is the direct determination and cognition of taste. That is, when the tongue meets the taste, it will distinguish a variety of different tastes, and finally determine the taste you taste.
When the body touches things, it will produce body knowledge, what is body knowledge? that is, the touch feeling of knowing, separating, and judging external things. When the body, touch, and body converge and merge, touch will occur, and what is touch? The disciples are in other words: when the body touches things, they will distinguish the existence and difference of the touch sensation of external things, and produce cognition of the touch feeling of external things. What is the difference between body knowledge and touch? Body knowledge is to distinguish and judge the presence and difference of the touch feeling of things. Touch, on the other hand, is the direct determination and cognitive sense of touch. That is, when the body touches things, it will distinguish various different touch sensations, and finally determine the touch feeling of knowing that he touches things.
When the heart meets material things and spiritual thoughts, consciousness arises, and what is consciousness? It is to recognize, separate, and judge external material things and spiritual thoughts. When the heart, material things, spiritual thoughts, and consciousness converge and merge, touch will arise, and what is touch? In other words, when the heart meets material things and spiritual thoughts, they will distinguish the existence and difference of external material things and spiritual thoughts, and start thinking about the cognition of external material things and spiritual thoughts. Consciousness is the distinction between the existence and difference of material things and spiritual thoughts. Touch, on the other hand, is to directly determine and recognize material things, spiritual thoughts, and then begin to think. That is, when the heart meets material things and spiritual thoughts, it will distinguish various material things and spiritual thoughts, and finally determine the material things and spiritual thoughts that you are in contact with and begin to think.
Disciples, how can suffering be extinguished? When the eyes meet things, they will produce insight through the transmission of light. Touch occurs when the eyes, things (transmitted by light), and the eyes converge and merge. The disciples are in other words: when the eyes meet things, the transmission of light will distinguish the existence and difference of external things, and produce cognition of external things. Taking "touch" as a prerequisite will produce various "feelings", and taking "feelings" as a prerequisite will produce "craving". When "craving" gradually fades, eliminates, and disappears, then "taking" will be eliminated and destroyed. When the "take" is destroyed, the "have" will be destroyed. When "being" is destroyed, "birth" will be destroyed. When "life" is destroyed, sorrow, sadness, pain, worry, despair, aging, and death are destroyed, this is the process of extinguishing and destroying suffering. Disciples, this is the practice of eliminating suffering.

When the body touches something, it will have a sense of body. When the body, touch, and body converge and harmonize, touch will occur. After the Buddha's teachings, the monks who listened to the teachings all paid homage to the Buddha again, praising the immeasurable merits of the Buddha's teachings, and they all practiced according to the Buddha's teachings.
