Chapter 28: How to Quench Anger?

Once, when the Buddha was living in a bamboo forest where the chinchillas were kept in the royal city, the Asura king heard that the Brahmin had converted to the Buddha and became a monk, and he became angry, and he came to the Buddha's residence with hundreds of soldiers. King Asura ordered the soldiers to insult the Buddha and maliciously slander. When the king of Persia learned of the actions of the king of Asuras, he immediately sent more than 2,000 soldiers to surround the army of the king of Asuras.


Buddha was silent and silent in the face of the insults and slander of the Asura king's army. King Asura and his soldiers cursed for a day, and seeing that the Buddha did not react, they stopped insulting and slandering the Buddha.


King Asura said to the Buddha weakly: "Bald, you have been conquered by us, since you dare not even say a word, you coward." Brahma is my younger brother, but you made him a monk, he already hates you bald people very much, why did he convert to you? What exactly did you give him Ecstasy? Don't think that we are surrounded by the army of the king of Persia, we are afraid of you, you are in our hands now, if he dares to attack us, I will order you and your disciples to be killed, see if he dares to act rashly!" ”


The Buddha said, "Ignorant people insult, slander, and use obscenities, and they think they have won, but those who really win are those who can bear the burden of humiliation." In the face of anger, insulting and slandering people who slander themselves, if they are also angry and respond to them with evil words, it will only make them more angry, they are doing evil deeds, and they are creating bad karma for themselves. Those who face anger, insult and slander those who slander themselves, do not respond to their bad words, and keep their hearts pure and peaceful, can win victory for themselves and the other party. When the other party is angry, only by letting themselves not respond to them and keeping quiet and pure people can the other party slowly calm down, and the other party's anger can be slowly eliminated. A long period of silence can release the anger of the other party, and when their anger dissipates, the abuse and slander will also stop. If you respond to the evil words of these angry people, it will inevitably add fuel to the fire, make the situation more uncontrollable, and even more tragic and irreparable things will happen, all of which are caused by the evil words in response to the other party, which increases the anger of the other party. If you don't respond to them, keep quiet, they themselves will slowly calm down, they themselves will stop insulting and slandering, so that it is good for themselves and those who insult themselves, and both parties can gain benefits. This person who does not respond and remains quiet is himself and the other person's doctor, the person who insults himself in anger, they have been entangled in the disease of anger, and their hearts are burned by fire and suffering. They are tormented by the disease of anger, and they don't know it, they are really poor ignorant people, they are actually hurting themselves.


King Asuras, sit down with your soldiers and drink a bowl of water, for the king of Persia should have come to bring you food, to entertain you, not to fight you. ”


At this time, the Buddha said:


"When a foul word is spoken, the fool thinks victorious.


However, the victor is a ninja.


Those who return anger are even more evil.


Do not return the anger with anger, and win two victories.


Know what he is angry about, and meditate on others.


Both self and others act in profit.


He is the physician of both sides and himself.


Those who are ignorant of the law are fools."


King Asura said: "Unexpectedly, what you said still has some truth, my heart was indeed like being burned by fire just now, you said that anger is a disease, I agree with this, my soldiers and I are suffering from the disease of anger, I now understand why you did not respond to our insults and slander, it seems that we are wrong." ”


King Asura then ordered the soldiers to sit down and drink water to rest. At this time, the king of Persia asked his soldiers to carry delicious food for the king of Asura and his soldiers to enjoy.


The king of Persia said, "King Asuras, I think you should be hungry, you come to taste the native products of our Proud Salo country, see if it suits your taste." ”


King Asura said, "King of Persia, I thought you had come to fight me. ”


The king of Persia said: "King Asuras, to be honest, I was really angry before and wanted to fight you, but then I thought about it, the Venerable taught me before that responding to anger with anger will only make the other party more angry and cannot solve the problem, and only by showing goodwill to the other party can the contradiction be resolved." So I went after that to prepare meals for you and your soldiers. I think you and your soldiers have been scolding for a day, and you are very hungry, you should really want to have a full meal. ”


King Asura laughed and said, "King Persia, it seems that you are a real person, and you are telling the truth!" You see, my stomach is growling now. Most of my soldiers were also hungry, and we came out in a hurry without dry food. ”


King Asura said to the Buddha, "Dade, please forgive us for our rude behavior just now, please let me take refuge in you, I am willing to be your home disciple, I am willing to practice according to your Dhamma." ”


The Buddha accepted the conversion of King Asuras, who offered all the belongings brought from this trip to the Buddha. After that, he had a happy meal with the Buddha and the king of Persia.

SN.7.3/(3) Asurindakasuttaṃ


   189. Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe. Assosi kho asurindakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo– “bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo kira samaṇassa gotamassa santike agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajito”ti kupito anattamano yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ asabbhāhi pharusāhi vācāhi akkosati paribhāsati. Evaṃ vutte, bhagavā tuṇhī ahosi. Atha kho asurindakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “jitosi, samaṇa, jitosi, samaṇā”ti.


   “Jayaṃ ve maññati bālo, vācāya pharusaṃ bhaṇaṃ;


   Jayañcevassa taṃ hoti, yā titikkhā vijānato.


   “Tasseva tena pāpiyo, yo kuddhaṃ paṭikujjhati;


   Kuddhaṃ appaṭikujjhanto, saṅgāmaṃ jeti dujjayaṃ.


   “Ubhinnamatthaṃ carati, attano ca parassa ca;


   Paraṃ saṅkupitaṃ ñatvā, yo sato upasammati.


   “Ubhinnaṃ tikicchantānaṃ, attano ca parassa ca.


   Janā maññanti bāloti, ye dhammassa akovidā”ti.


   Evaṃ vutte, asurindakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “abhikkantaṃ, bho gotama …pe… abbhaññāsi. Aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṃ ahosī”ti.
