Chapter 32: Purity is practiced step by step

Sometimes, the pure Brahmin came to the Buddha's residence, and after paying homage to the Buddha, he sat down on the side. The pure Brahmin said to the Buddha, "Venerable, all Brahmin practitioners in the world are not pure, even though they take vows and practice various austerities. In this world, only those who are complete in wisdom and body, mouth, and mind are the purest people, that is to say, only those who have received the vows, thereby making their hearts pure and stable, opening wisdom, having realized the supreme enlightenment, understanding the truth of everything in the world, and realizing the supreme true equality and universal consciousness of the universe, they are the purest people in the world. ”

At this time, the pure Brahman said:

"Though you take vows and practice austerity, what is the world like?

Brahmins are not clear, but those who are clear and sufficient.

This is the only one who is pure, and there is no purity outside it."

The Buddha said, "Brahmins, people in the world are not born pure, and although many people have recited mantras countless times to make themselves pure, their hearts are full of dirt, and their external actions are just window dressing deception, and there is no actual practice, these people are not pure people. Whether born in a family of princes and nobles, a family of priests and scholars, or a family of flat-headed people, slaves, or a lowly family of low status, or even born in a family of garbage sweepers. As long as they can physically act and do good deeds, speak good words, generate good thoughts in their hearts, stop evil and cultivate good, and practice persistently and persistently, they can make their own hearts pure and stable by not letting go of their own physical and verbal actions, and receiving good precepts, thus opening up their wisdom, and finally allowing them to reach the state of supreme purity and realize Buddha fruits. Pure people also practice step by step, and it is impossible to achieve it overnight and ascend to heaven step by step. Those who discipline their physical behavior, speak their words, do not let go of their inner thoughts, do good deeds, stop evil and cultivate good, they are cleaning up the dirt in their hearts, they are correcting their external behavior, they are people who are gradually making themselves pure, they are people who are moving towards supreme pure liberation. The supreme pure liberation is the result of step-by-step and down-to-earth practice, not the realm that can be achieved immediately or in a short period of time, but requires gradual and long-term practice to finally realize the fruit of supreme pure liberation.

At this time, the Buddha said:

"Though he sings many mantras, Emmane is unclean.

Relying on deception externally, it is not a pure path.

For example, Kshatriya, Brahman Vishya.

Sudha Jandhara, go into the water to sweep people.

Diligent and persevering, always brave and forging ahead.

Attain the most victorious purity, know this righteous pedestrian."

After the Buddha had spoken, the pure Brahmin said to the Buddha: "Venerable, yes, you are right, many people in the world want to achieve the fruit of pure liberation immediately, but they are not willing to practice down-to-earth practice. I was just talking about explaining the meaning of pure people, and saying it and actually doing it are two different things, and I prefer to talk about it. Even if I say it well, if I don't control my behavior, words, and thoughts, and don't let my physical behavior do good deeds, speak good words, generate good thoughts in my heart, don't do good deeds, don't stop evil and cultivate good, it won't do anything for me. Pure people are practiced step by step and persistently, not imaginary or verbal. Thank you, thank you, for speaking for me, please let me convert to you as your monastic disciple, I am willing to take your precepts, I am willing to practice according to your Dhamma. ”

The Buddha received refuge from the pure Brahmin, who practiced beside the Buddha, and soon he realized the arhat position and was forever liberated from the torment and suffering of the cycle of life and death.
