Chapter 92: Is There Lot of Dust on the Tips of Your Nails?

At one time, the Buddha lived in the Garden of Solitude in the Gion Grove of the Acropolis. One day, after lightly dipping a small amount of dust on the earth with the nails on his fingers, the Buddha said to the monks, "Disciples, look at the dust on the tips of your nails, or the dust on the earth?" ”


The monks replied, "Shi Venerable, there is more dust on the earth, and there is less dust on the tip of your fingernails, and the dust on the tips of your fingernails is really not as good as one percent, one thousandth, one hundred thousandth of the dust of the earth." Venerable, we estimate that the dust of the earth is infinite, and we can't specifically say how much dust on the tip of your nails is the dust of the earth, so we have to say one percent, one thousandth, one hundred thousandth of these virtual words that express surprise, in fact, the earth dust is incalculable, and the dust on the tip of your nails is basically negligible if it is compared with the dust of the earth. ”


The Buddha said: "Disciples, in the same way, with correct insight, holy disciples who have realized the first fruits (explanation of the first fruits, see chapter 70) and above, they have destroyed and eliminated a lot of troubles and pains, they have destroyed as much as the dust of the earth, they have very little residual troubles and pains, and their residual troubles and pains are as little as the dust on the tip of their fingernails. The disciples, that is to say, the holy disciples who have attained the first fruit, they have destroyed and eliminated a lot of troubles and pains, and the remaining troubles and pains are very small, if you want to compare, the remaining troubles and pains after their realization of the first fruits are one percent, one thousandth, one hundred thousandth of the problems and pain before the first fruit, of course, as you just said, one percent, one thousandth, one hundred thousandth These are just subjunctive words that express surprise. In fact, the remaining troubles and pains after their realization of the first fruits are basically negligible compared to the worries and sufferings they had before the first fruits of enlightenment. These holy disciples who have already achieved the first fruits of life, they can go back and forth between the world and the heavenly realm at most seven times, and they can be forever liberated from the cycle of life and death, that is to say, the holy disciples who have realized the first fruits, they can get rid of all troubles and pains at most seven more times in the cycle of life and death, they can be freed from this world forever, and they can be forever liberated from the cycle of life and death. Disciples, with correct insights, can obtain such great meritorious benefits by attaining the first fruits of enlightenment, and if they understand the Dhamma as mentioned here, they can obtain such great meritorious benefits. ”


After the Buddha's teachings, the monks who listened to the teachings all paid homage to the Buddha again, praising the immeasurable merits of the Buddha's teachings, and they all practiced according to the Buddha's teachings.

   74. Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Atha kho bhagavā parittaṃ nakhasikhāyaṃ paṃsuṃ āropetvā bhikkhū āmantesi– “taṃ kiṃ maññatha, bhikkhave, katamaṃ nu kho bahutaraṃ, yo vāyaṃ mayā paritto nakhasikhāyaṃ paṃsu āropito, ayaṃ vā mahāpathavī”ti?


   “Etadeva, bhante, bahutaraṃ, yadidaṃ mahāpathavī. Appamattako bhagavatā paritto nakhasikhāyaṃ paṃsu āropito. Neva satimaṃ kalaṃ upeti na sahassimaṃ kalaṃ upeti na satasahassimaṃ kalaṃ upeti mahāpathaviṃ upanidhāya bhagavatā paritto nakhasikhāyaṃ paṃsu āropito”ti. “Evameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa diṭṭhisampannassa puggalassa abhisametāvino etadeva bahutaraṃ dukkhaṃ yadidaṃ parikkhīṇaṃ pariyādiṇṇaṃ; appamattakaṃ avasiṭṭhaṃ. Neva satimaṃ kalaṃ upeti na sahassimaṃ kalaṃ upeti na satasahassimaṃ kalaṃ upeti purimaṃ dukkhakkhandhaṃ parikkhīṇaṃ pariyādiṇṇaṃ upanidhāya yadidaṃ sattakkhattuṃparamatā. Evaṃ mahatthiyo kho, bhikkhave, dhammābhisamayo; evaṃ mahatthiyo dhammacakkhupaṭilābho”ti. Paṭhamaṃ.
