Chapter 23: Which Three Thoughts Cause Suffering?
Once upon a time, King Prasenajit of Kosala came to the Buddha's dwelling. After bowing to the Buddha, he sat down and asked, "Venerable One, what thoughts arise in the mind that cause suffering?"
The Buddha replied, "Great King, when the mind arises with greed, it causes suffering. When the mind arises with anger, it causes suffering. When the mind arises with delusion, it causes suffering.
Great King, when the mind arises with these three thoughts, it causes suffering.
Those who have greed, anger, and delusion in their minds, they harm themselves and others. It is like a tree full of fruit, which is being stripped of its branches by many people. The branches are broken by the people, and the tree is harmed. The people are also harmed by fighting with each other for the fruit."
Then the Buddha spoke in verse:
"Greed, anger, and delusion,
These evil thoughts arise in the mind.
They harm others and themselves,
Like people fighting over the fruit of a tree.
The branches are broken, and the people are also harmed."
