Chapter 6: Few Wealthy People Can Control Themselves

Once, King Bimbisara of Magadha came to visit the Buddha and paid his respects. After sitting down beside the Buddha, he said, "World Honored One, when I meditate alone, I often have this thought in my mind: among those who have gained great wealth and become wealthy beyond measure in this world, very few are able to resist indulging themselves or refrain from doing wrong. They are always seeking satisfaction for their desires and harming others. On the other hand, those who gain great wealth but do not indulge themselves or harm others are extremely rare."

The Buddha replied," Great King, what you say is true. Indeed there are only a few people in this world who can gain great wealth without becoming attached to it or causing harm to others. Most people who acquire immense riches become addicted to sensual pleasures and behave recklessly with no self-control; they constantly seek more pleasure while hurting others.

These individuals become slaves of their own greed because they allow desire to control them completely. They cross boundaries that should never be crossed like deer falling into traps set by hunters. Those who indulge recklessly in their boundless greed will ultimately suffer greatly because they create countless negative karmas through their reckless behavior which will lead them towards painful consequences once their good fortune runs out.

They will experience as much pain as they caused for others during their lifetime of reckless behavior. Of course after living a life full of luxury and extravagance going back to poverty is also very painful."

At this moment, the Buddha recited a verse:

"Those who are obsessed with sensual pleasures,

Their minds seized by greed and desire,

Unaware of the path beyond,

Are like deer ensnared in a trap.

They will suffer bitter consequences later on,

For their actions will lead to evil results."
