Chapter 44: The Fruits of Filial Piety to Adoptive Parents

Once, a Brahmin came to the Buddha's residence, and after paying homage to the Buddha, he said to the Buddha, "Venerable, is it okay for me to feed my parents with the food and drink that others give and give to me?" Can I plant a lot of merit for myself by doing this? ”


The Buddha said, "Brahmins, filial piety to your adoptive parents is something you should do, as long as you do not violate the laws of the country where you are located, whether it is the food that others give you alms, alms, or the food you have obtained through your own proper labor, it can be used to support your parents." Your filial deeds to your adoptive parents can plant a lot of merit for you.


These filial to their adoptive parents are virtuous and wise people. Those who see filial piety to their adoptive parents should be praised. When they were alive, these people would be praised and praised by the public for their filial piety to their adoptive parents. When they die, they will be born in heaven to enjoy blessings. ”


At this time, the Buddha said:


"If man does the same, he who is filial to his parents.


In accordance with the law, parents behave.


In this life, the sages should admire him.


After he died, he was born in the heavenly realm."


After the Buddha had spoken, the Brahmin said to the Buddha, "Venerable, thank you for saying to me, I will continue to be filial to my parents, Venerable, please let me take refuge in you, I am willing to be your home practice disciple, I am willing to accept the precepts you have set, I am willing to practice according to your Dhamma." ”


The Buddha accepted the refuge of Brahmins.

SN.7.19/(9). Mātuposakasuttaṃ


   205. Sāvatthinidānaṃ. Atha kho mātuposako brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho mātuposako brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “ahañhi, bho gotama, dhammena bhikkhaṃ pariyesāmi, dhammena bhikkhaṃ pariyesitvā mātāpitaro posemi. Kaccāhaṃ, bho gotama, evaṃkārī kiccakārī homī”ti? “Taggha tvaṃ, brāhmaṇa, evaṃkārī kiccakārī hosi. Yo kho, brāhmaṇa, dhammena bhikkhaṃ pariyesati, dhammena bhikkhaṃ pariyesitvā mātāpitaro poseti, bahuṃ so puññaṃ pasavatī”ti.


   “Yo mātaraṃ pitaraṃ vā, macco dhammena posati.


   Tāya naṃ pāricariyāya, mātāpitūsu paṇḍitā.


   Idheva naṃ pasaṃsanti, pecca sagge pamodatī”ti.


   Evaṃ vutte, mātuposako brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “abhikkantaṃ bho gotama, abhikkantaṃ, bho gotama …pe… upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan”ti.
