Chapter 35: The Sorrow of Losing Fourteen Cows
At one time, Buddha lived in a dense forest in the kingdom of Jausaro. At that time, a Brahmin had lost fourteen cows, and he was looking for these lost cattle everywhere, and unknowingly came to the Buddha's residence, and he saw the Buddha meditating in the dense forest. He said to the Buddha in meditation, "Fourteen of my cattle were lost six days ago, and I was anxious and sad. However, the monk who meditates here, he does not have fourteen cows, but he is peaceful and happy.
This meditating monk, he did not grow vegetables, and when all the vegetables in other people's vegetable fields died and there was no harvest, he would not suffer misery. Other people's vegetable fields are hit by a disaster year or have no harvest, and others are worried and worried. He will not be anxious and bitter, he can still maintain peace and happiness.
This meditating monk, he does not have a barn, and when all the grain in someone else's barn is stolen and eaten by rats, he will not be miserable. The grain in other people's barns was all stolen by rats, and others were thunderous and angry. He will not be angry and miserable. He was still able to remain peaceful and happy.
This meditative monk, he has no quilt and blanket, and when in July, fleas and lice get into other people's quilts and blankets and gnaw on other people's bodies, he will not be miserable. Other people's beds, quilts, and blankets are all full of fleas and lice, and others are infestationed by flea lice and gnaw at night, crying and crying for days. This monk will not sleep restlessly and miserably. He was still able to remain peaceful and happy.
This meditative monk has no son, nor a wife or daughter by his side, and when someone else's son, wife or daughter encounters calamity, becomes seriously ill, or dies, or the daughter's husband dies and becomes a widow, others cry out to heaven and earth. He will not cry out to heaven and earth, and his heart will be like a knife file. He was still able to remain peaceful and happy.
This meditating monk, without a yellow-faced woman and a wife of chaff to accompany him, when others sleep and snore at night, they are kicked by the yellow-faced woman and the wife of the wretched to wake up drowsy and sullen. He doesn't sleep at night and is depressed. He was still able to remain peaceful and happy.
This meditating monk has no creditors who ask for money. When someone else's creditor stands outside someone else's door in the morning, blocking and shouting, "Pay back, pay back," making others sleep restless and worried, he will not be anxious and worried. He was still able to remain peaceful and happy.
At this time, the Brahman said:
"To this gate of fourteen oxen,
I have been searching for six days so far, but I have not seen him.
However, this shamen is for the most comfort.
Sow vegetables in the fields, and harvest the worst
Not one stem and two stems. However this shamen,
It is for the most blissful being. The barn is empty,
The rat flourished in it, and the fury was like a raging fire.
However, this shamen is for the most comfort.
The mat was done in July, and the bed was full of flea lice.
However, this shamen is for the most comfort.
One son and two sons, and seven women,
Not like a widow. However this shamen,
It is for the most blissful being. Brown black and white,
Spotted women sleep feet. However this shamen,
It is for the most blissful being. Creditors come and wait,
Standing the door to be harsh. However this shamen.
It is for the most happiness."
The Buddha said, "Brahmins, if they do not have fourteen cattle, they will not lose them. When all fourteen other people's cattle are sick or lost, Rulai will not be anxious and sad. Others look everywhere for fourteen cattle, which have been lost for six days, and when their hearts are like knives and worried, they will not be anxious and bitter. If you can keep your heart pure and peaceful, you will not produce pain, you will not produce happiness, you will not be bound by these things, you will not be disturbed and confused by these things, just as if these things did not happen, there will be no thoughts of joy, anger, sorrow, and so on in your heart.
If there is no vegetable field, if you do not grow vegetables, when all the vegetables in other people's vegetable fields die and there is no harvest, Rulai will not be miserable. If you can keep your heart pure and peaceful, you will not produce pain, you will not produce happiness, you will not be bound by these things, you will not be disturbed and confused by these things, just as if these things did not happen, there will be no thoughts of joy, anger, sorrow, and so on in your heart.
If there are no blankets and blankets, when in July, those fleas and lice get into other people's quilts and blankets and gnaw on other people's bodies, Rulai will not be miserable. If there is no wife, son, or daughter by his side, when someone else's wife, son, or daughter suffers from a calamity, falls seriously ill, or dies, or a daughter's husband dies and becomes a widow, others cry out to heaven and earth. If you come, you will not call the heavens and the earth, and your heart will be like a knife file. If you can keep your heart pure and peaceful, you will not produce pain, you will not produce happiness, you will not be bound by these things, you will not be disturbed and confused by these things, just as if these things did not happen, there will be no thoughts of joy, anger, sorrow, and so on in your heart.
If there is no yellow-faced woman and the wife of the chaff by the side, when others sleep and snore at night, they are kicked by the yellow-faced woman and the wife of the chaff to wake up and be drowsy and sullen. If you come, you will not sleep at night and be depressed. If you can keep your heart pure and peaceful, you will not produce pain, you will not produce happiness, you will not be bound by these things, you will not be disturbed and confused by these things, just as if these things did not happen, there will be no thoughts of joy, anger, sorrow, and so on in your heart.
If there are no creditors asking for money. When someone else's creditor stands outside someone else's door in the morning, blocking and shouting, "Pay back, pay back", making others sleep restless and anxious, Rulai will not be anxious and worried. If you can keep your heart pure and peaceful, you will not produce pain, you will not produce happiness, you will not be bound by these things, you will not be disturbed and confused by these things, just as if these things did not happen, there will be no thoughts of joy, anger, sorrow, and so on in your heart. ”
At this time, the Buddha said:
"Brahmins are troubled, and they have lost fourteen cattle,
I have been searching for six days so far, but I have not seen him.
Brahman, however, has no sorrow or joy.
The Brahmins were troubled and sowed vegetables in the fields.
The worst harvest is not one stem and two stems.
Brahman, however, has no sorrow or joy.
Brahmins are troubled, and the barn is empty,
The rat flourished in it, and the fury was like a raging fire.
Brahman, however, has no sorrow or joy.
Brahmins are troubled, and they are feasted for July,
The bed is full of flea lice. However Brahmin,
If there is no sorrow or joy. Brahmins are distressed.
There are one son and two sons, and there are seven women,
Not like a widow. However Brahmin,
If there is no sorrow or joy. Brahmin sorrows,
No brown black and white, spotted women sleep feet.
Brahman, however, has no sorrow or joy.
Brahmins are troubled, creditors are coming, etc.,
Forced to take debts, set up the door to be harsh.
But Brahmins, if they come, there is no joy or sorrow."
After the Buddha had spoken, the Brahmin said to the Buddha, "Oh, you said so well, it seems that what I think happiness is also disturbing and suffering, and I understand that when these things that make me happy decay and are damaged, I will have suffering." When I lose these things that make me happy, I suffer a lot. How much joy I had before to have these things, how much pain I had when these things decayed, broken, and I lost these things.
Dade, what you say is like correcting something that has fallen down and revealing what is hidden. What you say is like telling the lost person the right way, like lighting a candle in the dark so that those who walk in the dark can see what is around them. The same is true of the other teachings you said, please let me take refuge in you, take refuge in your Dharma, take refuge in your Sangha. I am willing to take the precepts that you have set, I am willing to practice according to your Dhamma, I am willing to practice monasticism with you. ”
The Buddha accepted the refuge of Brahmins. After the Brahmin has received full ordination, he goes into seclusion alone, does not let go of his physical behavior, speaks his words, thinks that arise in his heart, does not do evil deeds, he stops evil and cultivates good, and he pursues his practice according to the Buddha's Dharma. The reason why this Brahmin became a monk was to make his mind pure and peaceful through the practice of physical behavior, speaking words, and generating thoughts in his heart, so as to open up wisdom and finally realize the fruit of complete liberation. Soon after, the Brahmin realized, "From this lifetime onwards I will not be reborn again, my practice has been completed." What needs to be done has been done, I will no longer have the torment and pain of the cycle of life and death, and I have been freed from the cycle of life and death forever."
This Brahmin realized the fruit of liberation of the arhat and became one of the many arhat disciples of the Buddha.

196. Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā kosalesu viharati aññatarasmiṃ vanasaṇḍe. Tena kho pana samayena aññatarassa bhāradvājagottassa brāhmaṇassa catuddasa balībaddā naṭṭhā honti. Atha kho bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo te balībadde gavesanto yena so vanasaṇḍo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā addasa bhagavantaṃ tasmiṃ vanasaṇḍe nisinnaṃ pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. Disvāna yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi–
“Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, balībaddā catuddasa;
Ajjasaṭṭhiṃ na dissanti, tenāyaṃ samaṇo sukhī.
“Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, tilākhettasmi pāpakā;
Ekapaṇṇā dupaṇṇā ca, tenāyaṃ samaṇo sukhī.
“Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, tucchakoṭṭhasmi mūsikā;
Ussoḷhikāya naccanti, tenāyaṃ samaṇo sukhī.
“Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, santhāro sattamāsiko;
Uppāṭakehi sañchanno, tenāyaṃ samaṇo sukhī.
“Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, vidhavā satta dhītaro.
Ekaputtā duputtā ca, tenāyaṃ samaṇo sukhī.
“Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, piṅgalā tilakāhatā;
Sottaṃ pādena bodheti, tenāyaṃ samaṇo sukhī.
“Na hi nūnimassa samaṇassa, paccūsamhi iṇāyikā;
Detha dethāti codenti, tenāyaṃ samaṇo sukhī”ti.
“Na hi mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa, balībaddā catuddasa;
Ajjasaṭṭhiṃ na dissanti, tenāhaṃ brāhmaṇā sukhī.
“Na hi mayhaṃ brāhmaṇa, tilākhettasmi pāpakā.

Seyyathāpi, bho gotama, nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṃ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṃ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṃ dhāreyya– cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantīti; evameva bhotā gotamena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṃ bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Labheyyāhaṃ bhoto gotamassa santike pabbajjaṃ, labheyyaṃ upasampadan”ti.
Alattha kho bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo bhagavato santike pabbajjaṃ, alattha upasampadaṃ. Acirūpasampanno panāyasmā bhāradvājo eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva– yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṃ– brahmacariyapariyosānaṃ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. “Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ, kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ, nāparaṃ itthattāyā”ti abbhaññāsi. Aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṃ ahosīti.
Arahantavaggo paṭhamo.
Tassuddānaṃ–
Dhanañjānī ca akkosaṃ, asurindaṃ bilaṅgikaṃ;
Ahiṃsakaṃ jaṭā ceva, suddhikañceva aggikā.
Sundarikaṃ bahudhītarena ca te dasāti.
